Harmon Open House 2002

By Pierce Haviland

Each year, Metro-North hosts an open house at their shop in Croton-Harmon, New York. It is a wonderful way to learn about railroading. Kids can have their picture taken on a modern Genesis locomotive. There are demonstrations of track maintenance, signal design, training, and even flipping a box car on its side (and putting it back upright again). It takes a big effort to pull this off, but everyone has a nice day. Free train rides on the Hudson Line are another highlight of the event.

Diesel Power

The diesel shop displays an two FL9s, an FL9-AC and a CDOT Genesis engine.

Flavors of FL9s

A CDOT FL9 in NH colors is flanked by an FL9-AC and an FL9 in NYC colors.

Excellence in Training

Tony Fitzherbert prepares an exhibit on training. Learn how to become a conductor or engineer, or a track supervisor!

Genesis Power

A Genesis II dual-mode locomotive is open to the public. Kids have their picture taken sitting in the engineer's seat! They can't blow the whistle. There are people outside.

Tonka Engine

Metro-North's little shop switcher, the BLO-6, has only 600 horsepower and just two axles. It still has the power to pull heavy loads, thanks to a computer-based traction system. It is nicknamed the "Tonka Engine".

It's A Wreck!

Have you evern seen a box car flipped on its side, then put back on the track again? The North White Plains wreck gang demonstrates how this can be done quickly and safely.

Freight Hog

The GP35 is the primary road fright engine for Metro-North. It has 2,000 horsepower and can pull a lot of cars.

CDOT FL9

There are only a handful of FL9s left. You see them on the Wassaic shuttle on the Harlem Line. After nearly 50 years of service, they deserve a good retirement. This unit is in great shape.
